DIFFERENCE IN 304,316 AND 201 STAINLESS STEEL JEWELLERY

What is stainless steel ?

Stainless steel is one of the most environment friendly materials available today .It is alloy of chromium, steel, carbon and nickel. The different content of these elements determines the different grades of stainlss steel jewellery: 304, 316, 201 etc.

Stainless steel is not like silver jewellery that turn black ,not like copper that easily corrode ,and is not like any other jewellery easy to allergy.Stainless steel jewellery is a popular choice because of its style affordability and durability.

201 is mostly used in some cheap jewellery and is cheaper than 304 and 316L.

MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN 304 AND 316L STAINLESS STEEL JEWELLERY IS –

316L contains a rare metal molybdenum whereas 304 doesn’t contain that ,thats why 316L is bit more expensive.

  • 316 contains 12% nickel = molybdenum that resists corrosion better.
  • 304 contains 9% nickel is also corrosion resistant but less than 316.
  • 201 contains less nickel is least resistant to corrosion.
  • 316 is usually glossier and shinier than 304 .
  • 201 has a duller surface because of high manganese content.
201 contains manganese so it will rust if exposed to humid, salt-laden environments for long periods.
316L contains molybdenum making it ideal for high level chloride environments like salt water or chemicals, so it will last longer even if you wear in water regularly.
Ussualy ,life of stainless steel jewellery is 1-2 years…but whether its 201304 or 316L stainless steel, its better not to wear it for long periods in the water ,in the shower while excercising and try to keep it away from chemical elements so that your stainless steel jewellery lasts longer.

BOTH 304 AND 316L STAINLESS STEEL IS ANTIALLRGIC.

CONCLUSION

201 STAINLESS STEEL: The cheapest option. For occasional wear, can be an affordable option.

304 STAINLESS STEEL: A good balance between affordability and durability. More reistant to corrosion, great for everyday wear.

316 STAINLESS STEEL: A premium option .It is slightly more expensive but is suitable for those who frequently wear their jewellery in water or have very sensitive skin.
